How Shall I Be?

How I long to be like a deep rooted tree planted by streams of water, with my fruit bearing in its season and my leaves not drooping. How I long for whatever I do in goodness to prosper.

How shall I be these things? Writing this portion of the psalms in this manner helps me to make the word become my own. Please read the top paragraph again allowing the pronoun “I” to become personal. Do you not long to grasp the promises of God? Do you not long to simply be a deep rooted tree drinking from the streams of water that never runs dry?

How shall I be these things? I shall not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. My delight shall be in the law of the LORD, and on His law I shall meditate day and night.

Eugene Peterson author of the Message bible has a way of getting right to the nitty-gritty of the truth. Here is how he says it. “How well God must like you - you don't hang out at Sin Saloon, you don't slink along Dead-End Road, you don't go to Smart-Mouth College.  Instead you thrill to God's Word, you chew on Scripture day and night.  You're a tree replanted in Eden, bearing fresh fruit every month, Never dropping a leaf, always in blossom.” Ps. 1:1-3 the Message

Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;  But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Ps. 1:1-3 NKJ
